# Configure lifecycle thresholds and automation policies

> Set inactivity thresholds and review schedules, and create automation policies that resend review emails or reclaim license seats after a grace period.

Lifecycle policies control when items show up in the [review queues](/lifecycle/review-queues) and what happens when nobody answers a review. Open them from **Lifecycle** > **Policies**.

## Inactivity threshold

For each resource type, set how many days without activity it takes before an item is marked **Inactive**.

## Review schedule

For each resource type, set how many days a review can stay **Pending** before it becomes **Overdue**. You can also set a reminder cadence while a review is pending.

> [!NOTE]
>
> Changes to thresholds and schedules don't apply until you save them. Use the bar at the bottom of the page to save or discard your changes. Saved values apply to all three review queues.

## Automation policies

An automation policy follows up on reviews for you. It waits for a trigger, sends a review email, and takes an action if the grace period passes without an answer.

| Field | Description |
| - | - |
| **Name** | Shown in lists and in the audit trail. |
| **Type** | **Workspace review**, **Access review**, or **License review**. |
| **Trigger** | **Inactive for 30 days**, **Inactive for 60 days**, or **Inactive for 90 days**. |
| **Email template** | The review email to send. |
| **Grace period** | Days to wait after the trigger before the action runs. Use 0 to run it immediately. |
| **Action** | What happens when the grace period ends. See the table below. |
| **Enabled** | Turn a policy off without deleting it. A disabled policy stays in the list but stops running. |

The actions you can choose depend on the policy type:

| Action | Available for | Effect |
| - | - | - |
| **Resend the review email** | All types | Nothing is removed. The reminder goes out again. |
| **Reclaim the license seat** | License review | The license returns to the available pool and can be reassigned. |

## Create a policy

**1. Start a new policy**

On the **Policies** page, create a new automation policy.

**2. Choose the type and trigger**

Pick the policy type and how long an item must be inactive before the policy starts.

**3. Choose the email and grace period**

Pick the email template to send and how many days to wait for an answer.

**4. Choose the action and save**

Pick what happens if nobody answers, then save the policy.

> [!TIP]
>
> Check the **Last run** column regularly. If a policy that should be running hasn't run recently, it may have been disabled or its trigger no longer matches any items.
